PS:Hotell Company Information
General information
Vulkan is called “the city within the city”.
The area is a fusion of culture and creative industry. The diversity and composition of its business players is what makes great the “Vulkan” site. Students, environmentalists, cultural workers and food lovers will all contribute to make a difference in the Vulkan zone.
The history of the Aker River, the Lower Waterfall and the former Vulkan industrial area. The Vulkan area, reflects the history of Oslo. Here, industrial production has taken place since the Middle Ages, and at the foot of the hill nearby lies a silver mine that dates from the time of the Viking King Harald “the Though”, who founded Oslo in 1050.
Since the beginning of the 1800 century the industrial development of both the city and the country has been related to this site, Vulkan (from latin Vulcanus). The industrial period is now history, and after an intermediate phase when this area was either partly idle or used as a warehouse, people can once again use and enjoy this beautiful area of Oslo.
The river has nowadays both an aesthetic and environmental importance: to attract new business ventures and residents to this area. Vulkan is a site with energy efficient and environmental friendly buildings.
Here it is possible to find schools, hotels, cultural venues, restaurants, offices, shops and living quarters. We also find venues such as the Dance House, the Westerdals School of Communication, the environmental organization Bellona, the Scandic Vulcan hotel and PS:Hotell, and last but not least the Food Hall itself.
Students, environmentalists, culture lovers and food enthusiasts put their seal on this area. We call Vulkan: “the small city inside the city”. Our dream is, and has always been, to build bridges. Not in literal sense as in the past, but by connecting past and future, linking different cultures and age groups, and approaching culture and business, and especially uniting East and West. This way we wish to contribute once again to make our city a “smaller” place.
We hope you can join us in this endeavor!
